Awkward Stage Productions, Vancouver’s only theatre company dedicated to bridging the gap between amateur and professional musical theatre for emerging artists presents the Canadian premiere of the Ryan Scott Oliver and Hunter Foster musical, Jasper In Deadland, a spirited pop rock musical about life, death, and never letting go.
In this queer retelling of the classic myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, Jasper is a girl lost in the living world. She’s failing classes, kicked off the swim team, and her family is on the skids.
At least Jasper has Agnes. In a night of teenage passion, Jasper and Agnes consummate a years-long friendship. But in the morning Agnes is gone, telling Jasper to meet her at their cliff. When she arrives there’s no sign of her best friend, only a swirling vortex in the water below. Jasper dives into Deadland to find her beloved Agnes before she loses her love (and herself) forever.
Directed and choreographed by Erika Babins featuring a diverse cast of 9 emerging artists, Natalie Backerman, Merewyn Comeau, Nathan Cottell, Lucia Forward, Max Fritz-Borowski, Julia Maclean, Rose McNiel, Ryan Nunez, and Courtney Shields, Jasper In Deadland will play at The Firehall Arts Centre, 280 E. Cordova Street, as part of the 2018 Vancouver Fringe Festival September 06 to 16.
