Vancouver Fringe Review: Trudeaumania

I was a bit skeptical of another musical that features Trudeau.  Nothing political, I just did not enjoy an earlier, same-subject work, Just Watch Me, which played the Vancouver Fringe Festival a couple of years ago. I’m not sure why but this year, I thought I’d give it a go and I’m glad I gave it a chance because I found Walking Shadows’ production of Trudeaumania not only a huge improvement, but a totally different work that exceeded expectations.

A telling of former Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau’s early years into politics, Trudeaumania did not take itself seriously which made for good entertainment, however, it did not take away from the story it wants to tell.

The music is a huge improvement, too, seemingly taking inspirations from the works of Lin Manuel Miranda and Elvis Presley, performed by a very diverse and talented cast it truly made this bio musical an entertaining one.  My one complaint is that the toe-tapping, hum-inducing music should have been preserved on disc.

Walking Shadows’ Trudeaumania continues to play at the Firehall Arts Centre, 280 E. Cordova as part of the Vancouver Fringe Festival until September 16.
