From the downbeat of the Overture to the final chord of John 19:41, the audience was exalted by the power and glory of these fearless performers and their all-female band.
In January of 2017, an all-female concert version of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Jesus Christ Superstar was held at the Highline Ballroom in New York.
Directed by Richard Amelius with musical direction by Julie McBride, the rock opera boasts an all-star cast led by Shoshana Bean (Wicked) as Judas, Morgan James (Godspell) as Jesus Christ featuring Alex Newell (Glee) as Mary Magdalene, Orfeh (Legally Blonde and the upcoming Pretty Woman Musical) as Pontius Pilate, Ann Harada (Avenue Q) as King Herod, Pearl Sun (If/ Then) as Peter, Bryonha Marie Parham (Prince of Broadway) as Annas, Shayna Steele (Rent) as Simon, Ellyn Marsh (Kinky Boots), Sydney Morton (American Psycho, Evita), and Jasmin Walker (Avenue Q) as Apostles, Crowd, Lepers, and various roles.
The success of the concert led to a crowd funding project, reuniting the cast to preserve the all-female concept into a recording.
To date, the goal has already surpassed and the recording is now in process, if not, in posts already. The release of the recording is still not officially announced but is expected approximately in the Spring.
