It’s been a month since I last ran – that was at the Las Vegas Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon – and after what was supposed to be a week’s rest, we finally decided to go back into the routine by running a 10K fund raising run organized by the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre last 13 December 2015.
For 38 years, the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre has provided a safe space for women and children in the Downtown Eastside. The meals program is the DEWC’s most underfunded and important program, as food is the main draw to get many women in the door. Once inside, the DEWC has the opportunity to teach women about other programs and services, and provide access to much more than basic needs.
These meals are an amazing, daily feat; accomplished by creative, compassionate and hardworking kitchen staff. Your support will help share the love by feeding people who often go without. That love is a lifeline. The mission of the DEWC is to provide a safe, non-judgmental environment for women from all walks of life, who live or work in the Downtown Eastside. To achieve this goal, the Centre provides supportive surroundings with meals, counseling, advocacy and programs which nurture and empower members
It was a very wet and soggy run but that did not prevent a good turn out from Vancouver’s various running groups. No time limit and no bling, but nonetheless, it was a fun run under the rain, and a very good way to end 2015 running season!
