There were lots of talk about how difficult this Rock N Roll edition is, what with Seattle’s famous hills and inclines (much like Vancouver) but I found it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. I did expect that the terrible heat would be a challenge and prepared for it, we’ll sort of.
This was my 2nd Rock N Roll run for this year and my 3rd out of 5 official races that I signed up for 2015. Seattle is also one of my favorite cities and this was the first time I’ve done an official race in the city so what better way to do that than to sign up for the VIP experience.
Course: The run stretches through from downtown Seattle and its mostly through industrial areas and highways, with some residential areas, an waterfront in downtown, going up the residential neighborhood and and back downtown.
Great views when we got to the bridges and at 2 points, we had to go through tunnels where I tired to make up time, taking advantage of the shade. Very hill-y route but fun when going downhill. (4 out of 5)
Medal: very simple featuring Seattle’s landmark, the Space Needle. Great addition to my collection, this one from one of my favorite cities! (5 out of 5)
Gear: Nice material and doesn’t seem like it will pill easily. Graphic print features city silhouette. Just don’t like the gray colour and I don’t find orange and yellow goes well with it. (4 out of 5)
Spectators: Not as much or as lively as Portland, and I thought half the run was pretty quiet, although you’d feel the energy going out and coming in to the city.(4 out 5)
Course Entertainment: Few and far in between. There was a portion where we ran inside one of the 2 tunnels and in one of them, it seemed like they were just setting up, and this would have been an hour into my run already. Would have been cool if they set the tunnels up with lots of strobes. The only one that really stood out was the Elvis impersonator which we passed twice. (3 out of 5)
Expo: Lots of goodies and more fun activities with Brooks Run happy Island and at the Toyota booths featuring Spongebob Squarepants! Well organized package pick up. Would have been in and out in 10 minutes (maybe less) if I hadn’t been sucked into getting goodies from the Toyota Spongebob booth. (5 out of 5)
The VIP Experience: First time I’m doing this, and with no comparison, I really liked it.
Food selection of pasta, scalloped potatoes, wraps, salad, red velvet mini cupcakes, and dessert bars.
Had a 10 minute massage which we could have gone on if the sign up wasn’t too long.
Parking was free but we decided to walk it as we thought it’d be faster to do that than to weave through traffic and road closures (smart move, that one).
Had a bird’s eye view of the entertainment stage but no one really paid attention.
And the best part: endless beer and mimosas! (5 out of 5)
Total distance: 21.1K/ 13.1M
Official time: 2:18
Next up: the Rock N Roll Vancouver Half Marathon October 25 2015 – possibly doing the 10K Remix day prior
